October 2008:

Barbara Thomas

Born in Southern California, Barbara spent weekends with her family racing sailboats out of Long Beach. When her father was transferred to Sacramento, her opportunity to enjoy the ocean significantly decreased. Still longing for the coast, she set aside her childhood dreams of sailing, went to college, married and has two boys. Barbara currently lives in Orland.

During this time, she concentrated on using her art for gifts for family and friends and continues to do so today. She worked in an art supply store and continued taking classes on a regular basis, her focus on water color and clay sculpture. When the boys were small, she taught from her ceramic studio; when they went to school, she returned to college and obtained her teaching credentials. She still managed to make 2 or 3 quilts a year.

After a trip to the sea with her dad, all the dreams of sailing returned and changed her life. She put away the calendar and began watercolor painting again. Her first quilt after that was of the water color she had painted while on the trip. The renewed memories of playing in the ocean waves and wet sand brought the quilt “Wet Sand” to life and a whole new series of quilts.

Her first juried art quilt, “Old Man and the Sea”, was recently shown at the International Quilt Show/Long Beach in the Special exhibit “Surf’s Up” on July 25-27 2008.

Quilting combines her love of painting with the textural feel and three dimensional aspect of sculpture. Joining Annie’s Star Quilt Guild has encouraged and expanded her goals. Quilting has become her passion and honing her skills with new techniques her obsession.
